Bobal by Pablo Ossorio and music by Carles Magraner: a pairing that takes us back to our roots
The great wines of the twenty-first century take us “back to our roots”. That’s what English-speaking wine critics say when they extol the virtues of some of the gems from Spain’s wineries. “Back to our roots” is exactly how we might sum up the pairing between Bobos, a bobal varietal created by Pablo Ossorio from the Hispano+Suizas winery, and music by Carles Magraner, from Capella de Ministrers.
Together, this music and this wine combine to recreate the past, from the notes and the grapes themselves right through to the musical instruments and the techniques used in the vineyard and winery: delving into a world of sepia-tinted photographs, old texts written in Carolingian script and the oral memory of our elders. We mustn’t leave it too late as our recollections become imperceptibly confused and we need people who can recover the essence of what we once were and bring it up to date.
Magraner’s music reconstructs the flotsam of popular Valencian music from long ago so that we can hear and feel it in the same way as the people who wrote and performed it. It’s a Herculean task. The music is revived, restored and elevated to its rightful position as something unique and worthy of reappraisal, because we are all the product of our ancestors’ experiences and music.
Bobal is the second most planted grape variety in Spain but one of the least well-known. It is mostly grown on the Valencian meseta in Utiel-Requena and was shrouded in obscurity for centuries. The bobal grape variety provided the framework and skeleton for other famous wines and played a role like those supporting actors in films who are always praised but no one dares give them a leading role.
This is what Pablo Ossorio, the wine maker at the Hispano+Suizas winery in Requena, has done with Bobos, Finca Casa la Borracha. And he’s done so by going back to the roots, as he chose bobal from the oldest vineyards where the vines are grown in the traditional way, production is low and the grapes are carefully tended in order to take the star role, accompanied only by new French oak barrels where the wine will rest for 18 months before maturing in the bottle. It’s a unique wine which has been brought back from the past to prove that the classics live forever. It’s the best possible pairing for Magraner’s music. We hope you enjoy it.
